KORfan 3E8 Team Photographer
Legal Name: David Schrader
Derby Name: KORfan
Derby Number: 3E8
What is the meaning behind your derby name and number?
KORfan is my nickname from anime conventions. I'd spent about 10 years staffing them before I became addicted to roller derby and already had thousands of people who knew me as KORfan so I wasn't going to change my name. I'm KORfan because I'm a fan of K.O.R., that's the initialism by which the show Kimagure Orange Road is known.
The number 3E8 is an exponential number, it's 3 * 10^8, or 300,000,000. Anyone who studied physics would automatically read it in meters per second because it's the speed of light.
Why Roller Derby?
After I bought my house I needed a new escape because anime wasn't cutting it any more and I was both burned out on and didn't have time for staffing conventions. I was looking for new things in my life and saw a bout poster in the hotel lobby after a convention staff meeting and said “I'm going to this.” Two others joined me, and watching the bout I was blown away. The only coherent thought I could form was, “We need more of this,” and I still believe that today five years later.
Blocker, Pivot or Jammer?
Photographer. I can't skate due to some leg injuries.
Favorite song to skate to?
My favorite song for editing bout photos is “Shoot to Thrill” by ACDC. My favorite song to hear while at a bout is “Ca Plane Pour Moi” by Plastic Bertrand. I do like the sound of the cheer the Minnesota fans made for me.
Do you have any pre bout rituals? What are they for Home and Away Bouts?
I drink a lot of water, charge the batteries for my camera and flashes, figure out which signs I'm bringing to the bout, print maps to find the venue, and find a place to eat before hand. Once I'm at the venue I figure out where I'm going to sit, set my lights, clean my lenses, and calibrate my camera to the color of the light in the room. I also do some reference photos around the track using an artificial horizon because my brain sees the world about 3 degrees off of vertical. I talk to the other photographers to make sure we're all on the same page and pass along any relevant information (new skaters, retirees, special awards between periods, etc).

What do you do outside of Derby?
I'm a scientist in my day job, I study rivers. I read a lot, mostly science fiction and military history, and spend a lot of time on the internet. I do a poor job maintaining my house and avoid working on my yard.
What advice would you have for anyone interested in derby?
Go watch it if you haven't. It's a sport that takes place 10 feet in front of you, and it's not what you think it is. If you're considering trying it, do so; almost nobody else knew how to skate when they started either. It has rewards which you cannot yet imagine or understand.
In a few words can you explain how derby has affected your life?
Roller derby saved my soul.
What are your future derby ambitions?
I've achieved many of my derby photography goals, although there are some techniques I'd like to learn that are going to improve my photographs. I look forward to the day when I don't have to spend so much time chasing down copyright violations. I'd like to photograph roller derby in the NIU convocation Center. I'll probably help officiate some more bouts.
Who do you admire in Roller Derby?
Preflash Gordon, Gil Leora, Dave Wood. Medusa, Charlie Hustle, Zdork.
