Legal Name: Shannon Stone
Derby Name: Flunk U
What is the meaning behind your derby name and number?
I am a high school teacher and wanted something teacher-related and I thought that being a referee, calling out penalties also related to this name. I think it also has a little bit of an edge, which I might not appear to have on the surface, but if you get to know me on a deeper level you will see it.
Why Roller Derby?
I watched the Betties practice at the Y from day one as I walked the track. I was really inspired because I saw girls with body types like mine, in fact all shapes and sizes (and skill levels) were there. I thought it looked so empowering. I signed up first with Derby Lite to see if I liked it (which I did) and then saw that the Betties were having an informational night, what did I have to lose? That decision has changed so much in my life, and I would recommend it to anyone!

”The quickest way to acquire self-confidence is to do exactly what you are afraid to do.”
What do you do outside of Derby?
I am a high school business teacher and single mom to a future junior roller derby girl.
What advice would you have for anyone interested in derby?
Try it….there are so many options for whatever your skill level, even if you don’t want to skate. You will learn something new each and every time you come to practice. The reward is worth the challenge.
In a few words can you explain how derby has affected your life?
Monumental life changes in all aspects!
What are your future derby ambitions?
To be able to effectively call penalties as a referee and be able to work all ref positions.
Who do you admire in Roller Derby?
Each and every Bettie member, they have empowered me both on and off the track. They want nothing more than for someone to tryhard and be their best. You bring the hard work, commitment and focus and they will work with you.
